Crypto tax basics: a sane checklist for normal people

Crypto taxes without the panic. What's taxable, what isn't, and the records that save you four-figure mistakes later.

Tax rules vary by country and change often, so this is general education. Check your local rules or ask a qualified accountant.

Events that are often taxable

  • Selling crypto for fiat.
  • Swapping one token for another.
  • Spending crypto on goods or services.
  • Receiving crypto as income: salary, staking rewards, airdrops, mining.

Events that are often not taxable

  • Buying crypto with fiat and holding it.
  • Moving crypto between your own wallets.

Records to keep

  • Date, asset, amount and price in your local currency for each transaction.
  • Exchange exports and wallet addresses.
  • Fees paid, which can affect your cost basis.
  • Notes on transfers between your own accounts so they are not mistaken for sales.

Habits that save money

  • Export transaction history at least once a year.
  • Use one cost basis method consistently where your jurisdiction allows a choice.
  • Set money aside for the tax bill when you take profits.

This is not tax advice.
